Subaru outback 2009 White Wrecking

In automobiledom, some models are just transportation, while others grow to be part of the family. They’re a loyal friend for the daily commuter, the weekend Bunnings run and the long-haul holiday journey down to Margaret River. In the state of Western Australia, that vehicle is the Subaru Outback and in particular, the third generation (BP series) version. It’s a real automotive Swiss Army knife, and for the past 15+ years working at WA Auto Parts we have come to greatly admire its well thought-out design principles and long-lasting workhorse performance.

So today we present you with an opportunity to take a look at our newest member: 2009 Subaru Outback Premium in Satin White Pearl. As a complete car, its life is over, but it has a ways to go. It’s a tale of preservation, of mindfully collecting the best bits to ensure dozens of other cherished Subarus remain on the turnpike roads of Perth where they belong.

The Review & The Elephant in the Room

This 2009 Outback arrived not with the hushed burble of its signature boxer engine. The car was towed in, a non-runner with a tale that accompanied many Subaru enthusiasts – suspected engine fault. To the uninitiated, this may appear to be a dead end. It’s just the first chapter to our skilled technicians.

The first walk-around is very thorough. It’s not just damage that we are looking for; it is potential. This Satin White Pearl paint, despite being a good 15 years old, remained lustrous. The passenger side panels were straight, the rear bumper and tailgate were dent and damage free – and all four factory alloy wheels looked to be in good condition.

From here we went on to the Subaru specific stuff. The frameless windws on all four doors, which was a characteristic of this generation, glided down. We pressed the colossal factory sunroof into service, and it reared up and slid back without so much as a hiccup. Inside, the cabin was something of a time capsule. The black leather interior was a rare and pristine addition, with the MOMO wheel showing only light wear, and the optional 6-stack CD player decking popped to life with ease.

And now we have to talk about the elephant in the room: THE MOTOR! This era of Subi’s 2.5L EJ25 boxer engine is a workhorse but does have one well-documented weakness with the head gaskets. This seemed to be the issue in our diagnostics. Most wrecker’s would simply classify the engine as scrap, however we are not like most wreckers at WA Auto Parts.

Every part of it is important to us. We would never offer this engine as a running ‘drop-in’ unit, but just imagine the haul of spares for an adventurous DIY man or professional workshop. The engine block itself is good, the heads are good reconditioning candidates, and all those ancillaries—the alternator; the power steering pump; the A/C compressor; the ignition coils; the sensors—were tested workign items ready to solve some other Subaru owner’s woe. That level of transparency is our business model; we don’t think it’s fair to hide what you’re getting in your food.

Picking the Best Parts – The Premium Option

Once that inspection was finished, we went about meticulously taking apart our Premium model and preserving the best bits.

The Interior Upgrade Package: One of the first things we did was gut out all of the interior. To the owner of a run-of-the mill Outback or Liberty wagon, this vehicle is everything you expect or want in an aspirational luxury model. We salvaged:

The Full Leather Seats: Heated fronts and neat rear bench, all carefully dismantled out and wrapped up.

The MOMO Steering Wheel: A real, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, is noticeably nicer to hold.

The Premium Audio & Climate System: I have tested the 6-stacker head unit and dual-zone automatic climate control unit then removed it, ready for a plug-and-play in to your appropriate model.

The Sunroof Assembly: This is a big time win. We pulled out the whole sunroof cassette — the glass, the motor and tracks as well as the headliner. It’s a tricky but coveted role.

Symmetry AWD Gold: Engine may have been a bit fragile, but the rest of the drive train was rock solid. After the knock, the 4-speed Sportshift auto gearbox was unobtrusive and responsive. We drained its fluid and found it to be clean, free of pollutants—a good sign. The gearbox, as well as the tailshaft, driveshafts and aforementioned hand grenade-strong rear diff were all carefully extracted. These are Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system essentials, and if you ever need to maintain one of these components, it’d be essential to have a source for tested reliable parts in order keep these cars safe and capable on the road.

The Body, Glass and Wheels: The straight un-damaged panels from the passenger side and rear were carefully unbolted. The rear hatch, including its wiper and spoiler, was removed. Frameless doorglass was not available and we removed the heavy glasses and checked for scratches before putting in inventory. Lastly, the factory 17-inch alloy wheels did come off and cleaned up nicely to be swapped in for a trashed set on a later or older model.

Ford Ranger 2016 White Wrecking

Here in WA some cars are more than a car to get around. They’re instruments of work, business partners and admission passes to adventure. They are part of the landscape, caked in Pilbara red dust, or working through the tight laneways on a Perth work site. The Ford Ranger sits squarely at the top of that list. It’s the undisputed king of new-school ute, a machine designed for hard yakka and weekend getaways.

But what of the workhorse that can no longer run the race? And for more than a decade, WA Auto Parts has been finding out. We believe even when a vehicle has been taken off the road one of its most valuable parts can go on to have a second life. The Assessment: Not Just a “Wreck”

So, this Cool White Dual Cab Ranger didn’t drive to the stand on its own. To the layperson, the buckled roof and pillars spoke a terminal tale. But for us, this is where the happy-hour treasure hunt starts.

Our lead tech, Dave grabbed his clipboard and started his systematic walk-around. A vital first step of a job learned from years of taking everything apart, from Japanese Kei cars to American muscle. It is automotive autopsy — a process of deciding what can be saved and given new purpose.

“The roof’s a goner, obviously,” he said, and began taking notes. “But look lower down.” He passed his hand along the driver’s side doors. “Straight as a die. No impact here. Glass is good, mirror’s intact.”

He continued his circuit. The front end? Untouched. The potent 3.2L turbo diesel engine reclined beneath ‘em as if they were a passing thunderstorm. The rear tub has a few scratches in the liner — evidence of an honest working life — but the tailgate was straight (its handle did its job) and there was even a reversing camera, still perfectly positioned. The inside of the messino was in great shape, sheltered from the worst of it.

This initial assessment is everything. Provides us with the ability to look past the damage, and form an excellent perspective on remaining life of the car. This Ranger wasn’t just a hulk; it was also a hoard of real Ford parts, and our mission was to strip them with the respect and diligence they had earned.

The Drivetrain: Harvesting the Heart

As a Ranger owner, the beast of your vehicle is the revered 3.2L P5AT 5-cylinder turbo diesel engine. That is after all why so many people buy these utes—its low-down torque, its reliability, and its towing muscle. Getting a healthy one is our primary goal.

Before any spanner turns the engine bay it’s where the work really starts. We connected our state-of-the-art diagnotic reader to the OBD-II port, looking for DTCs stored in your engine’s ECU. The report was clean — an excellent sign.

Next, the crucial test. We drained the fluids, hooked up a tiny gas reservoir and turned the key. The big 3.2L lit up at the first turn of the key with that classic 5-Cylinder burble. We fired it up, brought it to temperature and Chapter II Listen2 close listeneing for any egregious sounds of discontent, watching the tail pipe for smoke and a steady idle. It performed flawlessly. With only a tad more than 112,000 km on the clock, this engine was barely broken-in.

The automatic 6-speed transmission was tested with the same severity. We tried everything, Drive, Reverse, Sport mode—and every shift made was smooth and for a purpose. We also inspected the 4×4 system and shifted the transfer case into 4-High and 4-Low to ensure it worked just as well.

We gave the go-ahead only when all of these tests were cleared. We then have to remove the wiring harnesses, fluid lines and mounts with our mechanical team. The rest of the engine, gearbox and transfer case was hoisted out cleanly. This turn key, tested and warranted drivetrain is now just waiting to be a solution for that person looking at either a catastrophic engine failure or the high cost of rebuilding their transmission saving them thousands of dollars.

Beyond the Engine: Saving the Good Bits

Now that our mechanical heart is out of it harm’s way, we focused on the rest of the car. An udern ute is a maze of wires, toughened panels and luxury interiors, and we’ll harvest them all.

The Tub, Tailgate, and Exterior Panels: The ute tub is one of the most frequently dented structures on a Perth worksite. A new one from the dealer can make your eyes water. This Ranger threw up a straight, well body complete with factory plastic liner and tie-down points. The tailgate, which they removed and will pop into the works just fine. The four sequences of doors were unbarred, all intact. You can buy them in complete form (glass, regulators and speakers) or bare shells should you wish to retain your own window gear.

The Tech and Interior Comforts: Today’s work ute is a rolling office. This particular Ranger was an XLT, and it featured the desirable SYNC 2 multimedia setup. The 8-inch touchscreen, which served as the command hub for navigation, audio and phone calls was tested and removed with its modules. This is a very popular upgrade for owners of lower spec models with the standard radio.

The interior itself was immaculate. We salvaged:
A full complement of seating: Clean, supportive and rip-free.
The steering wheel: All of the cruise control and audio buttons work.
Whole dash assembly and Centre Console: A large number of items from air vents, switches through to console bin and lid etc.

They are ideal parts for updating a tired interior that has had a few too many dusty boots and spilled coffees in it.

Wheels, Suspension and Brakes: Original full set of Ford XLT alloy wheels were replaced. They had the usual scrapes, but they were straight and sitting on respectable all-terrain tyres. And even the suspension in its standard form (front struts and rear leaf springs) was fabulous for any owner wanting to put his hacked-up ute back to stock condition.

The Outcome: From One Ute Came a Thousand Solutions

The process is now complete. The stripped-out carcass of the white Ranger, which has had all its value removed from it, will be depolluted by our responsible end-of-life disposal partners ready to be recycled. But its legacy is now lining our shelves, archived and available.

From one written-off car come hundreds of unique solutions. The engine in question is going to revitalize another Ranger. The straight door will repair a crash victim’s ute. Kia Rio 2012 Red Wrecking

Every car has a story. It’s scrawled in the scuffs on the door sill, the barely visible coffee ring on the centre console and the steadily growing numbers on that thing called an odometer. For some cars, that story comes to an abrupt end. A lousy bounce, a mechanical breakdown, an unlucky crash. We think differently though, the end of one story is just the start of many new ones at WA Auto Parts. And it’s a reputation we’ve been established on for over 15 years here in Perth.

Today, we walk you around and show you how one such car got from concept to reality: this bright Signal Red 2012 Kia Rio that recently came rolling into our facility. This is not a tragedy, but a transformation: of a “wreck” into an asset for drivers all over Western Australia.

The Arrival and Initial Assessment

Upon its arrival at our Maddington auto recycling yard, it was obvious to us all that the no longer a whole car. And it’d been hit in the front end pretty good. The hood was bent like a piece of paper, the radiator support crushed in and the driver’s side headlight destroyed. To the uninitiated, it appeared a write off ready for the crusher.

For our expert staff, however, this is when the hard part starts. This is a treasure hunt.

Dave, our lead technician (who may have taken more cars apart than most people have owned) was going to first evaluate the situation. This is a painstakingly, almost forensically, detailed process. He marched its outer boundaries, his eyes passing over each panel, each piece of trim, every sliver of glass.

“We lose the front, there’s no doubt,” he said, holding a clipboard. “But look here.” He indicated the passenger side. “The door is straight. No dings. The a mirror assembly is flawless, signal and all. The rear passenger door? Same story. Which is welcome news for the Rio owner who’s been sideswiped in a car park.”

He moved to the rear. The tailgate was clean, the spoiler shiny and the back glass in one piece. The tail lights were clean, and the rear bumper really only had minor scuffing that would no doubt polish out. The odometer showed just over 145,000 kilometers — certainly low by the car’s age. This told us that the parts of the universe that weren’t part of the crash probably had plenty more life to live.

This initial walk-around is critical. We can establish an initial parts list and make some sense of what the car is capable of. It’s the difference between viewing a wreck and seeing a dozen future repairs for other Kia owners all at penneys on the dollar as to what new parts cost.

The Teardown: Part 1 – Saving the Inside

At last! Upon completion of the evaluation, the laborious task begins. “Interior is always our starting point. It’s the most vulnerable part of the car, and maintaining its condition is essential.

The cabin of this Rio was a shocking good condition. Both the front and rear seats were rip free and had no major stains. They would look almost new with a professional clean. Our crew unscrewed them with care, surrounded them in protective plastic and stacked them to add to inventory. A mint set like this is treasure for anyone not wanting a run down interior.

Then the dashboard and centre console. This is intricate work. You can’t just pull and rip. Each screw, each hidden clip, every wiring harness requires precise unplugging. You want to take the entire assembly off without anything chipping or breaking. We salvaged:

The HU: Random factory CD player/radio; works fine. Great for someone who had an original unit that went bad.
The Steering Wheel: The airbag was in tact (an important safety check), and the steering wheel audio controls worked fine also.
The Gauges: Everything is fully functional, clear and present and ready to be dropped in.
Centre Console, Door Cards and Trim: Each panel was removed, thoroughly cleaned and examined. Even window switches and gear knobs are retained, because we have learned from experience these are the very parts that break to irritate car owners every day.

By the end of Stage 1, the car’s interior was reduced to a bare metal shell yet our shelves were stacked with quality, cost-effective cabin parts that are set to breathe life into another Kia Rio.

The Teardown Part 2 – Panels, Lights and Glass

With the fragile inside out of risk, we go along to the outside. And here is where the juxtaposition of the worn and unworn geographies gets even more stark.

The unsmashed doors on the passenger-side were meticulously taken out, including all their innards—regulators for windows and speakers and locking actuators. We test everything individually before we can put our stamp on it. The electric side mirror was also pulled off, the motor checked and its case polished.

The tailgate was next. Uninstallation of a modern tailgate is a two-man operation. It’s heavy, and it includes a lot of wire for the rear wiper and brake light, as well as to power the licence plate lights. We removed all that stuff carefully and then unbolted the hinges. This one assembly yields a dozen possible parts to keep as spares.

Finally, the lighting. The rear tail light assemblies were flawless—no cracks, no moisture. They were unbolted, their bulbs examined and the units are cleaned and offered for sale. These are hot items as a little tap between the eyes of the rear bumper can so often be anywhere from hundreds to over a thousand dollars for new parts and labour. The Teardown: Part 3 - Heart of the Machine

Once there, you are at the last and most technical part. The front-end impact totaled the radiator and A/C condenser. But the engine and transmission, pushed well to the rear of the initial site of impact, were a good sign.

Our mechanics ran a few tests. We inspected the engine oil for metal shavings and transmission fluid for discoloration or burning. Everything looked clean. The powerplant, a dependable 1.4L petrol engine (G4FA) was considered to be salvable either as whole implementation, or valuable parts thereof.

The engine and transmission were methodically unhooked from the driveshafts, exhausts and wiring loom and the whole lot lifted out of the engine bay in one assembly. Once in the stand we could cull those forever-necessary ”bolt-ons”:

Alternator
Starter Motor
A/C Compressor
Ignition Coils
Throttle Body

The 4-speed automatic transmission was pulled apart and checked; unsurprisingly, it was perfect. For somebody that’s faced with an expensive transmission rebuild, a fail-safe (low kilometer) used unit like this can save them thousands.

The alloys (standard 15″ factory) were pryed off as well. They had a little bit of curb rash, as in all likelyhood there would be, but we’re straight and true. Clean them up and they’re a great upgrade for someone with steelies.

The Result: Multiple Solutions, All Out of One Car

The red Kia RIO’s journey is over. What was a single vehicle going down is now hundreds of solutions. The empty shell is to be properly depolluted and sent for metal recycling – ensuring that nothing goes to waste.

But its best parts live on. The straight passenger door will mend another family’s car. a new looking taillight will allow someone to pass their roadworthy inspection. Here’s the reliable alternator that will get a commuter back on the road.
